The surrounding mountains and rivers provide ample opportunities to enjoy outdoor activities surrounded by spectacular views. When planning your adventure, be sure to include some golfing, horseback riding, hiking, biking, canoeing, camping, fishing, and hunting.
There’s no better way to appreciate the natural beauty of our area than to actually get outside and just walk around. Trails of varying strenuousness wrap around the mountains and rivers, allowing hikers of all levels of experience and fitness levels to easily navigate their way. We even have a special mountain that only kids can climb!
Our county is home to the largest concentration of artists in the Southeast. Twice a year the Toe River Arts Council hosts a public tour drawing thousands of people here to tour galleries & artist studios. In addition, there are numerous classes available throughout the year to develop your own skills (from novice to professional artisan) in glass-blowing, painting, pottery, & ceramics. And don’t forget to schedule a visit to the famous Mt. Mitchell Crafts Fair, always held the first Friday & Saturday in August, showcasing many of our local artists.
Our scenic river valley supports all types of water activities – from tubing & rafting to swimming and fishing… And don’t forget to return in the winter for great snow-skiing both downhill and cross-country.
