Emerald Village offers nighttime underground mine tours that unlock vibrant hidden colors available only under ultraviolet light, commonly called black light. The brilliant coatings in the Bon Ami Mine are largely deposits of Hyalite Opal, a true form of opal found in this area. Reservations for the Black Light Tour are not required but are recommended. You provide comfortable walking shoes and a light jacket is recommended. A fun filled day of fun, food, and music for all ages.

Each Penland session ends with an auction of work donated by students, instructors, and friends. These auctions are culminating celebrations of the work done in the classes, and they are an opportunity for neighbors, travelers, and craft enthusiasts to enjoy the energy of a Penland session. All proceeds support the Penland scholarship program.

Many stops on the map will showcase more than one artist. Art lovers create their own tours, travel at their own pace, and stop for lunch on their own schedule. A TRAC Studio Guide, available in early May, shows the locations of the studios and galleries on the tour. The Studio Guide, along with arrowed Tour signs aid travelers in finding their destinations. Over 100 artisans and galleries open their doors and invite the public. It is a rare opportunity to visit the actual workplaces.

Mountain Farm in Yancey County is hosting its Final Annual Lavender Festival. This popular two-day event features a Lavender Labyrinth with garden tours and cultivation tips, Festival Cafe’, Craft Vendors, and Live Music. There will be workshops on Lavender wands, Mead-making, Culinary Lavender Cooking classes with Chef Matt of Smoking Goat Epicurean Arts; honey bee, and fiber animal shearing demos. Cut your own Lavender bouquet. Entertaining farm animals and our own cheese-tasting booth. Gift Shop open.
